Basics

In this course, you will learn how to develop software by working on a full stack search engine in Java throughout the semester.

This course will meet in-person for the first time on Tuesday, August 25th at 2:40pm in the School of Education Building (located on Turk Blvd) in room 310. Visit the Modality section for more details.

Highlights

This is a non-standard class that uses specification grading, mastery learning, and code reviews to determine your grade. Here are some highlights:

• Your final grade is based on the number of project milestones and exams you pass by the end of the semester.
• The project milestones build on top of each other and must be completed in-order (in other words, you cannot work ahead).
• The project milestones are only graded during the weekly code review appointments and only one milestone is graded at a time.
• You are only guaranteed 1 code review appointment per week. Additional appointments are not guaranteed, even if you fall behind.
• You must pass at least one exam to pass this class. Each exam includes one retake opportunity. The exam grade will be the average of the first and retake attempts.
• For the most part, there is no additional penalty to submitting project milestones late other than losing a weekly code review opportunity. If this happens too often, there may not be enough weeks left in the semester to complete the code reviews necessary to pass the class.
• Attribution (especially of any collaboration or AI usage) and incremental commits are required to avoid violating the academic integrity policy.
